Psalm 3 – Scripture, Devotional, And Prayer

Are you ready for part III in the study?  Let’s go!

Psalm 3

A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.

1 Lord, how many are my foes!

   How many rise up against me!

2 Many are saying of me,

   “God will not deliver him.

3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,

   my glory, the One who lifts my head high.

4 I call out to the Lord,

   and he answers me from his holy mountain.

5 I lie down and sleep;

   I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

6 I will not fear though tens of thousands

   assail me on every side.

7 Arise, Lord!

   Deliver me, my God!

Strike all my enemies on the jaw;

   break the teeth of the wicked.

8 From the Lord comes deliverance.

   May your blessing be on your people.

REFLECTIONS –

At times, I feel defeated.  I feel like my foes are many.  Perhaps, not literal foes, but adversaries that come in the form of general misfortune, continual striving, and the feeling that no matter how hard I strive, I don’t seem to gain any ground.  It can be overwhelming, and it can feel like I am drowning at sea.

And yet, in these times, I am not without strength.  Because, You, Lord, are a shield around me.  My glory, the One who lifts my head!

My heart cries out – sometimes, verbally – other times, in the silence of my mind. From a place below my consciousness that I don’t even know is speaking.  It says, “Lord… help me.  I’m in a situation that I lack the power to get through on my own.”  These cries, I believe, He hears from His holy mountain.

His is the hand of deliverance, no matter what we are going through.  If we are mourning.  If we are struggling with depression.  If we are caught in financial struggles.  If we are dealing with physical ailments.  If our foes are literal or figurative, God is on our side.  In every struggle, we are better off turning to Him.  Let us trust in Him for our deliverance!

PRAYER –

Lord, many are our foes.  Life can be discouraging.  It can be defeating.  We sometimes feel as though we are surrounded by adversaries, trying to bring us down.  Please, Lord… step in.  Give our hearts strength to keep hoping and trusting.  Give us the will to press on and seek your face, through any opposition we face.  You are our comfort.  Our shield.  The lifter of our heads.  Amen.
